1. Product Overview
CAT6A UTP 23AWG×4P delivers 10GBASE-T 10 Gigabit Ethernet over a 100 metre channel at 500 MHz — with no metallic screening at all. It is the most cost-effective route to 10 Gigabit at the work area outlet, and it is also the construction that places the greatest demands on design discipline and installation workmanship.
Unshielded 10 Gigabit cabling is entirely mainstream and widely deployed. But it achieves its performance through geometry and craftsmanship rather than through a conductive barrier, and that distinction has consequences that must be planned for, not discovered on site.
2. How Unshielded Cable Fights Interference
A screened cable rejects interference with a physical barrier. A UTP cable rejects it with balance — and balance is created by three things:
Pair twist lay. Each of the four pairs is twisted at a different rate. Differential twist means that interference induced into one leg of a pair is largely cancelled by the interference induced into the other leg, because the two legs swap positions continuously along the run. Different lay lengths between pairs also prevent energy from coupling coherently between them. This is why twist lay is a controlled manufacturing parameter and why preserving it during termination matters so much.
Conductor symmetry and insulation consistency. Any asymmetry — uneven insulation thickness, eccentric conductor, inconsistent material — converts common-mode interference into differential-mode noise that the receiver cannot cancel. Manufacturing consistency is therefore a genuine performance feature, not a cosmetic one.
Internal separation. With no foil between pairs, the only way to reduce pair-to-pair coupling is physical distance and geometry. CAT6A UTP constructions commonly use a cross filler or pair separator, larger conductor insulation, or a deliberately increased overall diameter to hold pairs apart. This is why unshielded CAT6A is noticeably thicker than unshielded CAT6 — the size is doing work.
3. The Alien Crosstalk Question, Honestly Addressed
External interference between adjacent cables is the real constraint on unshielded 10GBASE-T. Without a screen, there is no barrier between one cable and its neighbours in a bundle.
The practical mitigations are all installation-side:
• Limit bundle size. Large tight bundles of many cables are the worst case; keeping bundles smaller materially reduces coupling.
• Maintain separation from power cabling and from other interference sources, per the applicable installation guidance.
• Avoid long parallel runs pressed tightly together in the same conduit or tray.
• Use appropriate cable management spacing in racks and patch fields.
• Terminate carefully, preserving twist lay as close to the contact as the connector permits.
These are achievable in normal commercial construction, which is why unshielded CAT6A works well there. They become hard to guarantee in a high-density data centre with thousands of cables in maximum-size bundles — which is precisely why screened CAT6A dominates in that environment.
Match the cable to the density. If the project is an office building with normal outlet density and standard containment, UTP CAT6A is a sound, economical choice. If it is a dense data hall, screened construction is worth the premium.
4. What This Cable Buys You
• Lower material cost per metre than screened CAT6A.
• Faster, simpler termination — no drain wire handling, no shield folding, no bonding to verify.
• No earthing scheme to design, no risk of ground loops, no dependency on shielded connectors and panels being installed correctly.
• Smaller, lighter and more flexible than double-screened equivalents, easing containment fill and cabinet space.
• Fewer specialised components: standard UTP CAT6A connectors, panels and outlets.
In other words, the total installed cost advantage is larger than the per-metre cable price difference suggests, because the labour and hardware savings compound.
5. Jacket Material: Confirm Before Ordering
The model designation for this product does not state the jacket material, and it should not be assumed. PVC and LSZH differ substantially in fire behaviour and in regulatory acceptability:
• LSZH is required in enclosed and high-occupancy locations — escape routes, hospitals, schools, airports, metros, cinemas, high-rise occupied floors.
• PVC is acceptable in many plant rooms, equipment areas and locations where halogen-free materials are not mandated, at lower cost.
Confirm the jacket compound against the project specification and the building's applicable code before ordering. Ordering the wrong jacket for a regulated building can force a complete re-pull.
6. Sizing and Physical Planning
Although lighter than screened CAT6A, unshielded CAT6A is still substantially larger than CAT6. Recalculate containment fill, verify bend radius against the actual diameter, allow adequate patch panel port spacing, and confirm pulling tension limits. The cable's internal separator structure is what holds its performance together; crushing, over-bending or over-tensioning damages that geometry and there is no screen to compensate.
7. Applications
• Office and commercial buildings requiring 10 Gigabit to the work area outlet
• Education campuses, universities and research institutions
• Healthcare facilities in areas where 10 Gigabit is needed (with the correct jacket for the location)
• Enterprise networks upgrading from CAT5e or CAT6 to 10GBASE-T at the access layer
• Environments with normal cable density and no severe external electromagnetic interference
• Projects where total installed cost and installation speed are decisive
• Buildings without significant VFD, traction power or heavy industrial interference sources
8. Ordering Guidance
Confirm jacket material first — this is the one item the model designation leaves open. Then confirm conductor material (oxygen-free bare copper is essential for a 10GBASE-T permanent link), internal structure, overall diameter, alien crosstalk test availability, box length and printing. State the intended bundle configuration so installation spacing guidance can be provided, and verify against the project specification that unshielded construction is acceptable for the location and density involved.
